Since Wednesday (12-12-07) I’ve put myself on a pretty strict diet and started working out at our apartment’s gym regularly. I’ve been keeping a record of my weight each day after I work out, and using a webpage called skinnyr to create as graph a I go.
So, to keep me motivated, I’m posting that graph here on the blog where anyone who wants to can be a fitness coach for me by keeping an eye on my graph and yelling at me if I stop recording weights on it or if I start going back up. Staying motivated on my own is hard, so hopefully y’all can help me out!
Since this post will get pushed off of the front page eventually, I created a copy that is easier to get to. If you look over on the right side of this page there is a link that says “Weight Loss”. Just go to that link to see the latest graph any time.

Hehe - yeah… I’ve already had to turn down free cake and ice cream twice since Wednesday, and I imagine Christmas goodies will be just as difficult. I’m going to try to stick to the three-bite rule: I can try various deserts and whatnot over Christmas, but just three, very slowly-eaten bytes, then move on to something healthier.

More power to you, Dean! I’ve been wanting to lose at least 10 pounds for a long time, but was insufficiently motivated until it became a choice between losing weight or going on prescription meds to bring down a total cholesterol level of 269 — yikes! Starting after our August vacation, I cut out most breads/pastas/spuds and all sweets (along with overall portion control) and stepped up the exercising a bit, and I lost 10 pounds in about 8 weeks. Just today, I got the results of my follow-up cholesterol test — down to 215. That’s enough to keep my doctor off my back about meds, though I should eventually get it down under 200. So I’ll be right there with you trying to “be good” over the holidays.

Don’t be discouraged about that upward bump, Dean. You may have just eaten something salty and be retaining water - or maybe on Sunday & Monday, you happened to weigh yourself with a completely empty gut or just after sweating a lot. Weighing every day, you’ll see zigging and zagging like that. Still, being down almost 4 pounds in 6 days is rapid weight loss. If you can sustain 2 pounds a week average loss over time, that would be an accomplishment. They say the slower it comes off, actually, the more likely it will stay off!

Oh yeah, I knew going into this that my weight would fluctuate up and down somewhat independently of calorie intake/output. As long as I can lose 1-2 pounds per week, I can be down to my fighting weight by next summer.

Fighting weight? Do you have a career change in mind =)

Well, Matt and Joe at work have been talking about a Terminal Reality Fight Club…

What the heck? I’ve been exercising just as much and eating just as well as I was last week, and now I’m almost back where I started! Oh well, I guess it can still be explained by natural weight variations or scale weirdness… Maybe with the weight lifting I’ve been doing in addition to jogging I’m gaining muscle mass faster than I’m losing fat mass or something.
Oh well, all I can do is keep on going and see where things are in another week.
