BUSY!!!!
Okay I know the readers are just dying to know how it is going, and it one word it is fantastic! Yesterday was orientation which lasted 5 hours and today was my first full day.
In training with me is one other person, Kevin (35), also from DFW. He was a GM at Chilis and decided to go to another restaurant. Him and I get along great and I feel so much better that he is here with me. He has so much more experience than I do so I can lean on him, and I have so much more route memorization/study skills that he can lean on me. Even though there is a 10 year difference between us, I can never tell.
We have decided to car pool together which, after getting frustrated with the highway system last night, is great for me! I don’t think I could have asked for a better training partner than him. He also told me what his first impression of me was, “a strong woman that sends the message of get out of my way so I can get shit done”. He thinks I am a natural for management, which means a lot to me since my weakest thing is self confidence (which no one believes!). He said so many good things about me that I almost cried!
As for the job aspect, my feet hurt like hell, but I feel so elated. I cannot describe what it feels like to get so much respect! I have always been the lowly person on the totem pole, and when I was higher up, the environment was lax. Just the way people look and talk to you makes me stand up taller and feel proud of myself. It sounds cheesy, but I am sure that some of y’all remember when that happened to you. I guess the best way to describe it is, hmm, well I can’t. All I can say is it is a wonderful feeling.
Today, and for the rest of the week, we will both be in the kitchen. At lunch I was at the “shake” station; the place where the wings get coated in sauce. I picked it up in only a few minutes. At dinner I was at the “chip” station where I was making the fries, wedges, corn dogs, chicken patties, fish, mozzarella sticks, ect. It took about 10 min to get that down since I had to learn the portion sizes based on order (a side compared to and appetizer).
This was my day:
- breakfast at hotel buffet
- ride with Kevin to work
- count safe
- count drawers
- kitchen prep sheets
- shake wings
- another prep sheet
- prep food
- break for food/work book stuff
- fry station
- work book
- dive back
- dinner at hotel with free wine
- back in room at 7:30
I need to put away my clothes since now they got me hangers, and take a shower, and go to Target (or something) to get better shoes, and talk to Dean.
Working so many hours in a day is crappy because I don’t feel like I have enough time for maintenance stuff, like making a blog post =) I will try to keep y’all updated, but from now on it will probably occur on my days off, which are twice a week. If you are curious about how it is going, please feel free to call. On Thursday I will get my first day off and I will post my schedule so you know when you can call me.
